About

Lauded by Opera News as “one of America’s most gifted young singers,” Korean American mezzo-soprano Alice Chung is recognized for her "operatic tonal glamour" (Parterre) and being “a force of nature with a sound both powerful and appealing” (San Francisco Classical Voice).

The 2025–26 season includes her international debut as Olga in a new production of Eugene Onegin at The Grange Festival, conducted by Lidiya Yankovskaya and directed by Max Webster, as well as her role debut as Laura Adorno in La Gioconda with Pittsburgh Festival Opera.  Recent seasons have included a series of notable role debuts across both standard and contemporary repertoire, demonstrating her versatility as both a vocalist and dramatic interpreter.  Ms. Chung’s Amneris in Verdi’s Aida with Boston Lyric Opera was commended by Boston Classical Review to be “supplying some of the finest moments of pure theater in recent memory.”  Her “lithe voice” and “propulsive energy” (Parterre) as Dinah in Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti with Annapolis Opera, along with appearances in several contemporary American operas, demonstrate the stylistic breadth of her artistry.  Other highlights include the title role in Bizet’s Carmen with Hawai’i Opera Theatre, Mother in the world premiere of Derrick Wang’s Fearless with OperaDelaware, and Ox/Pig in the world premiere of The Big Swim with Houston Grand Opera.

Ms. Chung is a graduate of The Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, a 2025 Ravinia Steans Music Institute fellow, and a two-time alumna of the prestigious Merola Opera Program, garnering acclaim from San Francisco audiences for her excerpted portrayals of Gertrude in Hamlet, Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, Augusta Tabor in The Ballad of Baby Doe, and Azucena in Il trovatore, which Parterre praised for its “riveting dramatic intensity.” Competition honors include First Place in the 2024 Loren L. Zachary Society Competition, First Prize and Audience Choice Award in the 2022 Young Patronesses of the Opera Competition, the 2021 William Matheus Sullivan Foundation Audition Awards, and First Place in the 2021 Cooper-Bing Competition. She is also the recipient of the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation and a continuing grant recipient of the Olga Forrai Foundation.

On the operatic stage, Ms. Chung has also worked with Arizona Opera, Asia Society Texas, Central City Opera, Chautauqua Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, San Francisco Opera, and more. Additional operatic credits include Dame Quickly (cover) in Falstaff, Mother and Die Hexe in Hänsel und Gretel, Ježibaba in Rusalka, Hiroko Kobayashi in An American Dream, Maddalena in Rigoletto, and Suzuki in Madama Butterfly. On the concert stage, she has sung with the Annapolis Symphony, Art Song Chicago, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Dream Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Modesto Symphony Orchestra, Protestra, Syracuse Orchestra, and the Naples Philharmonic at Artis-Naples. Concert highlights include Bernstein’s Symphony no.1 Jeremiah, Mahler’s Symphony no. 2 and Kindertotenlieder, Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky, and Saint-Saëns’s Oratorio de Noël.

As the artistic director and co-founder of the arts and advocacy non-profit organization Wear Yellow Proudly, Ms. Chung devotes her time to raise awareness of Asian American narratives and culture in the classical music industry by producing unique musical experiences that otherwise are rarely seen on larger stages.
